Tag question | Question Tag in English Speaking

आप अंग्रेजी बोलना चाहते हैं, है न?

You want to speak English, don't you?

आप व्याकरण सीखना नहीं चाहते हैं, है न?

You don’t want to learn grammar, do you?

Ø इन दोनों sentences में जो ये “don’t you” और “do you” आये हैं, ये “QUESTION TAGS” कहलाते हैं, और ये Spoken English में अक्सर use होते हैं। “Question tags” का use “CONFIRMATION” माँगने के लिए किया जाता है। अर्थात अगर आपको कोई बात पता हो या फिर आप दुविधा में हों और आप confirm करना चाह रहे हों तो आप इनका use करें। ये बहुत ही खास तरह के प्रश्न होते हैं क्योंकि ये दूसरे प्रश्नों से बिल्कुल भिन्न होते हैं। वो कैसे? वो ऐसे कि अगर ऊपर के दोनों वाक्यों में से इन्हें हटा दिया जाए तो आप पाएँगे कि दोनों ही वाक्य statements हैं। तो ये "Question tags" वो Short-questions या फिर कह लीजिए Mini-questions हैं, जो statements के अंत में जुड़कर उन्हें प्रश्न बना देते हैं। वैसे तो इनका use “Spoken English” में ही होता है लेकिन कभी-कभी “Informal writing” में भी इन्हें use किया जाता है।

Ø इनका मतलब कुछ ऐसा निकलता है: "Is that right?" or "Do you agree?" (है न? / है कि नहीं?)

For example:

तुम आ रहे हो, है न?

You are coming, aren’t you?

वह खाना नहीं बना रही है, है न?

She isn’t making food, is she?

Ø अगर statement ‘positive’ है तो tag ‘negative’ आएगा और अगर statement ‘negative’ है तो tag ‘positive’ आएगा।

Basic structure:

(+) Positive statement	(-) Negative tag
It’s cold,	isn’t it?

(-) Negative statement

(+) Positive tag

It’s not cold,

is it?

Ø यहाँ आपने देखा कि Question tags का प्रयोग Positive और Negative senteces के साथ किया गया है लेकिन इनका प्रयोग Interrogative sentences के साथ नहीं किया जा सकता।

For example:

Is she the new teacher, isn’t she? (Incorrect)

She is the new teacher, isn’t she? (Correct)

She isn’t the new teacher, is she? (Correct)

Ø अगर आप ध्यान दें तो आप पाएँगे कि Question tag में उसी verb का use किया गया है, जो statement में पहले से ही मौजूद है। सिर्फ Present Simple और Past Simple के Positive sentences में कोई auxiliary verb नहीं होती इसलिए tag में do, does या did का use करना होता है।

For example:

बैठक 5 बजे है, है न?

The meeting is at 5, isn’t it?

बारिश नहीं हो रही है, है न?

It isn’t raining, is it?

रोहन वहाँ था, है कि नहीं?

Rohan was there, wasn’t he?

मीरा को नाचना पसंद है, है न?

Meera likes dancing, doesn’t she?

मीरा को नाचना पसंद नहीं है, है न?

Meera doesn’t like dancing, does she?

आप संगीत सुनते हैं, है न?

You listen to music, don’t you?

आप संगीत नहीं सुनते, है न?

You don’t listen to music, do you?

वे वहाँ गए थे, है कि नहीं?

They went there, didn’t they?

वे वहाँ नहीं गए थे, है न?

They didn’t go there, did they?

हमने वो कभी नहीं देखा है, है न?

We have never seen that, have we?

उसने हमें आमंत्रित नहीं किया था, है न?

She hadn’t invited us, had she?

मीरा अंग्रेजी बोल सकती है, है कि नहीं?

Meera can speak English, can’t she?

आपको देर हो जाएगी, है न?

You will be late, won’t you?

उसे जल्दी नहीं करनी चाहिए, है कि नहीं?

He shouldn’t hurry, should he?

Ø अगर वाक्य में negative words हों जैसे कि never, no, nobody, rarely, seldom, barely, hardly, and scarcely, तो भले ही sentence positive हो लेकिन उसका sense negative निकलता है और इसलिए उसे negative sentence की तरह ही treat किया जाता है, और इनके साथ Positive tag का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

आप हमें कभी सच नहीं बताते हैं, है न?

You never tell us the truth, do you?

वहाँ कोई नहीं है, है न?

There is nobody, is there?

यह बिल्कुल अच्छा नहीं है, है न?

It’s no good, is it?

वे शायद ही उसे सुन सकें, है न?

They could scarcely hear her, could they?

Answering Tag Questions

आप “Yes” या “No” कह सकते हैं या फिर आप टैग को ही repeat कर सकते हैं लेकिन reverse करके।

For example:

They don’t come here, do they? – “Yes, they do.” Or “No, they don’t.”

Quiz:

You go to school, ________

do you?

don't you?

We will wash the clothes, ________

won't we?

wouldn't we?

We must obey our elders, ________

shouldn't we?

mustn't we?

She's still sleeping, ________

isn't she?

wasn't she?

They won't be late, ________

won't they?

will they?
