15 Golden rules of
Subject-verb Agreement
(Subjects are in bold,
and verbs are in italics.)
·
I write with a pen.
·
He writes with a pen.
‘I’ aur ‘He’ dono hi to ekvachan hain fir dono ke sath
alag-alag verb kyon aayi?
Is concept ko samajhne ke liye ‘Subject-verb agreement’
rules ko samjhna bahut aavashyak hai aur ye bahut hi aasaan hai. Mushkil to is
duniya me kuchh bhi nahi hai to ye to sirf kuchh rules hain jo aapko ek baar
padhna hai.
Subject-verb agreement simply means the subject and verb
must agree in number. This means both need to be singular or both need to be
plural.
(कर्ता-क्रिया समझौते का सीधा सा मतलब है कि कर्ता और क्रिया को संख्या में सहमत होना चाहिए। इसका मतलब दोनों को एकवचन होना चाहिए या दोनों को बहुवचन होना चाहिए।)
Lekin is singular plural ke bhi kuchh fixed rules hain jise
aapko ek baar samajhna hai aur aap aage se kabhi mistake nahi karenge.
Aur wo rules hain:
The subject-verb agreement rules apply to all personal
pronouns except I and you, which, although SINGULAR, require PLURAL forms of
verbs. Aur to aur jab “I” ke sath verb “BE” ka use karte hain to present me
“am” aur past me “was” ka use hota hai.
According to this rule,
1. Singular nouns
always take singular verbs.
2. Plural nouns
always take plural verbs.
3. He, She and It
always take singular verbs.
4. We, You and
They always take plural verbs.
5. Except verb
“BE,” pronoun “I” always takes a plural verb.

singular verb form.

my favourite dish. (both refer to same dish)
·
The actor and producer is
arriving soon. (both refer to same person)
3. If the
subjects are both singular and are joined by the words "or,"
"nor," "either…or," "neither…nor," or "not
only…but also," use a singular verb.
·
Either Rohan or Meera is
coming.
·

visiting you tomorrow.
·

my favourite colour.
4. If the
subjects are both plural and are connected by the words "or,"
"nor," "either…or," "neither…nor," or "not
only…but also," use a plural verb.
·
Not only burgers but also pizzas are
available at the cafe.
5. If one subject
is singular and the other is plural, and the words are connected by the words
"or," "nor," "either…or,"
"neither…nor," or "not only…but also," use the verb form of
the subject that is nearest the verb.
·

going shopping. (nearest subject is plural)
·

going to shopping. (nearest subject is singular)
6. If the subject
is an uncountable noun, use a singular verb.
